The town is located on a hilly spur overlooking the Era Valley.
Of Lombard origin, it was the castle of the bishop of Volterra before being conquered first by Pisa and then by Florence.
A historical symbol of its territory is the imposing Rocca di Pietracassia, one of the most important examples of early medieval architecture in Tuscany,
built in Lombard times to guard the road leading to the copper mines of Montecatini.
Many trails can be traveled on foot, by bike or MTB and even on horseback, discovering the natural and historical beauty of the places.
